about me PDF Print E-mail

Quick run-down.  I am originally from Kailua, Hawaii, where I was born and raised.  I graduated from Kamehameha High School, and then went on to BYU to study Computer Science.

In June 2008, I married my best friend, Alyssa, who is an excellent photographer.  I will try not to embarrass her too much on this website, but you can check out her stuff for yourself.  You really should think about hiring her for your next event or family pictures!

I'm still on the mainland, but can't wait to be able to go back home for good.

my interests

Currently, I am extremely interested in just about any new and exciting technology.  I do a lot of internet and web related projects, because it is fascinating to me.  I am currently interested in PHP, especially the Zend Framework, and I've always preferred MySQL, but am branching out to things like Sqlite.

At the moment, I am most interested in Java applications because I think that the principle behind Java is very pervasive and is where many consumer applications are headed anyhow.  Especially for business, how can you have a product that only works on a certain system?  I have a very inclusive mentality on how applications should be made.  This is why web applications are so great.

You may think I love JSP, but I don't.  I actually prefer PHP when it comes to web development, because it is dirt simple and if you do it right can be very powerful and fast.

I experiment with basically everything, and even though I love open source technologies, I have a good working knowledge of .NET.

I also have some super secret interests that may develop into useful projects.  If you're curious, I've always got some idea brewing.  Likewise, I am always open to good business ideas.

computers growing up

In case you were curious about how I have come to this point, I will explain some history.  A long time ago, can't even remember when, my dad had an old 286.  It was a very plain and boring monochrome-yellow monitor and a very plain and boring command prompt.  There weren't very many programs, and few were useful to me(with Wordperfect being the exception).

I loved playing with those computers, I just got a crazy kick that something would actually listen to me I guess.  I would type a command, and it would go and do what I said.  Wow.  I then began to experiment with this more and more.  This was probably in the 2nd grade.  In 4th grade I think it was when we upgraded to Windows 3.1 on a 75MHz Pentium!  I started to tinker with QBasic(cause it was easy).  That was cool.

By the 5th grade, due to encouragement by a great teacher, I was able to create some of my first websites. Ever since then I have evolved into more and more things, Javascript was probably the launching platform which drove me to the real languages, and the rest is history.

My Junior year in high school I was beginning to get into Linux, and since then have never really looked back.  I don't miss Windows that much at all, but I still have to use it, at work and for some school things.

So that's probably more than you needed to know, but hopefully helps you to get a feel for where I'm coming from.
